General Surgery Conditions We Treat

Patients may be referred to a general surgeon for a variety of abdominal, gastrointestinal, and soft-tissue conditions. Dr. Malladi evaluates and treats conditions including gallstones and gallbladder disease, ventral and umbilical hernias, hiatal and paraesophageal hernias, certain stomach and small-intestinal conditions, lipomas, and epidermal inclusion cysts.

Not every condition requires surgery. After evaluating your symptoms, medical history, imaging, and other test results, Dr. Malladi will discuss whether surgery is appropriate and which treatment approach is best for you.

Minimally Invasive General Surgery

Whenever appropriate, Dr. Malladi performs general surgery using minimally invasive techniques, including laparoscopic, robotic-assisted, and endoscopic procedures. These approaches allow many operations to be performed through smaller incisions than traditional open surgery. However, minimally invasive surgery is not appropriate for every patient or every condition. Dr. Malladi considers the diagnosis, surgical history, overall health, and complexity of the procedure when recommending an approach.

General Surgery Procedures

Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy

An endoscope, which is a long, flexible tube mounted with a camera, can be used to diagnose a variety of gastrointestinal conditions, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastrointestinal bleeding, hiatal hernia, and anemia. Findings are used to determine whether certain procedures are needed, such as fundoplication or other general surgical procedures. An upper endoscopy may also be used for pre-operative testing for weight loss surgery.

GI Endoscopy

Laparoscopic Anti-Reflux Surgery

A laparoscopic fundoplication can help with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In this procedure, the hernia is sealed and the top part of the stomach is wrapped around the base of the esophagus, thereby creating the pressure necessary to keep stomach acidic fluids down.

Another surgical treatment is the LINX procedure. A necklace of magnets is placed around the lower esophagus to help keep stomach acid from coming up the esophagus.

Reflux Surgery

Laparoscopic Stomach or Small Intestinal Surgery

Sometimes certain tumors on the stomach or small intestine can be removed through minimally invasive techniques. These surgeries involve taking out a part of the stomach or small intestine which is affected by the mass and connecting them back together.

Frequently Asked Questions About General Surgery

General surgeons diagnose and surgically treat many conditions involving the abdomen, digestive system, abdominal wall, and soft tissues. Dr. Malladi’s general surgery practice includes gallbladder disease, abdominal wall hernias, certain stomach and intestinal conditions, upper GI disorders, and soft-tissue masses such as lipomas and cysts.

Dr. Malladi performs procedures including gallbladder removal surgery, abdominal wall hernia repair, upper GI endoscopy, hiatal hernia repair, anti-reflux surgery, selected stomach and small-intestinal procedures, and removal of lipomas and epidermal inclusion cysts.

Yes. When appropriate for the patient and condition, Dr. Malladi uses minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopic, robotic-assisted, and endoscopic procedures. Some conditions may still require an open surgical approach.

Laparoscopic surgery is performed through several small incisions using a camera and specialized surgical instruments. Open surgery uses a larger incision to access the surgical area directly. The most appropriate technique depends on the procedure, the patient’s health and surgical history, and the complexity of the condition.

Gallbladder removal may be recommended for people with symptomatic gallstones, inflammation of the gallbladder, or other gallbladder problems. Dr. Malladi will review your symptoms and diagnostic testing before determining whether surgery is appropriate.

Abdominal wall hernias include ventral, incisional, and umbilical hernias. Depending on the type, size, location, and patient’s health, hernia repair may be performed using an open or minimally invasive surgical approach.

No. Abdominal pain and digestive symptoms can have many causes, and surgery is not always necessary. A general surgery evaluation can help determine the cause of the problem and whether additional testing, medical treatment, observation, or surgery is appropriate.
